Overview

Strange Island Creative was the moniker for my graphic design and illustration related work, before I decided to consolidate it all under one umbrella. I created the portfolio site using Webflow with a simple illustrative hero section, and some recent selected work. While I find Webflow simple and relatively intuitive to use, it’s pricing options are relatively steep for smaller, independent builds.

I wanted the hero illustration to be minimalist, geometric shapes, inspired by the Vancouver Island scenery where I live, with an earthy colour palette. The logo to me, in addition to being an ‘S’ and an ‘I’, almost appear to form a strange creature, which seemed fitting.

The illustration was also displayed with a subtle parallax movement on scroll, which gave a sense of depth, and allowed me to get comfortable with Webflow’s interactions feature.

I feel this project succeeded in feeling clean and open, without many distracting noise or details. The illustration and colour palette kept it grounded in it’s nature inspired theme. However the depth of content could have been developed further, with more comprehensive examples, especially as a portfolio site.

I was able to get comfortable building with Webflow, utilizing it’s interactions feature, and dialling in the responsiveness with break points. Webflow certainly has strengths including it’s CMS ability, but when possible I definitely enjoy coding from scratch, or through Wordpress.
